 # Subtraction of Metric Measures – Methods, Examples | How to Subtract Metric Measures?

The other way is to subtract like units by placing the digits in columns and subtracting. To understand in detail we will go with one example which we will solve in two methods.
Example:
Subtract 8 km 5 hm 9 m 4 cm and 5 km 2 hm 3 m 2 cm.
Solution:
Method 1:
Place the given two digits in columns and remember to place the highest number on top and the least number below. Subtract them usually. Therefore the result of the difference is 3 km 3 hm 6 m 2 cm.
Method 2:
Convert the given two numbers into same unit that is we will convert them into km.
we know that 100000 cm = 1 km, 1000 m = 1 km, 10 hm = 1 km
8 km 5 hm 9 m 4 cm = 8 km + $$\frac { 5 }{ 10 }$$ km + $$\frac { 9}{ 1000 }$$  km + $$\frac { 4 }{ 100000 }$$ km
= 8 km + 0.5 km + 0.009 km + 0.00004
= 8.50904 km
5 km 2 hm 3 m 2 cm = 5 km + $$\frac { 2 }{ 10 }$$ km + $$\frac { 3}{ 1000 }$$  km + $$\frac { 2 }{ 100000 }$$ km
= 5 km + 0.2 km + 0.003 km + 0.00002
= 5.20302 km
Now by subtracting them we get
8.50904 km – 5.20302 km = 3.30602
Therefore the result of the difference is 3.30602 km.
Here are some examples involving subtraction of metric measures of length, mass, and capacity and we will be solving these examples in the first method only and this will make students understand easily about the concept.

Example 1:
Subtract 12 kg 7 hg 8 dag 9 g 5 dg 5 cg and 5 kg 2 hg 4 dag 3 g 3 dg 3 cg.
Solution:
Arrange the given numbers in the column vertically and also remember to write the highest number on the top and the least number below. Subtract them from right to left. Therefore the result of the difference is 7 kg 5 hg 4 dag 6 g 2 dg 2 cg.

Example 2:
Subtract  9 km 6 hm 5 dcm 5 m 7 dm 4 cm and 4 km 0 hm 3 dcm 5 m 3 dm 2 cm.
Solution:
Arrange the given numbers in the column vertically and also remember to write the highest number on the top and the least number below. Subtract them from right to left. Therefore the result of the difference is 5 km 6 hm 2 dcm 0 m 4 dm 2 cm.

Example 3 :
Subtract 9 kl 7 hl 6 dal 5 l 2 dl 4 cl and 5 kl 4 hl 3 dal 3 l 1 dl 2 cl.
Solution:
Arrange the given numbers in the column vertically and also remember to write the highest number on the top and the least number below. Subtract them from right to left. Therefore the result of the difference is 4 kl 3 hl 3 dal 2 l  1 dl 2 cl.
Example 4:
Ramesh bought 530 m 58 cm of cloth from the store. He gave 257 m 24 cm to Vivek to stitch a dress. How much cloth is left with him?
Solution:
Given
Ramesh bought cloth from store = 530 m 58 cm
The cloth he gave to Vivek = 257 m 24 cm
Cloth left with Ramesh = Ramesh bought cloth from store – Cloth he gave to Vivek Therefore cloth left him with Ramesh is 373 m 34 cm.
Example 5:
Mohan bought 5 kg 567 g of rice and out of which he used 2 kg 345 g of rice in 15 days. How much amount of rice is left with Mohan?
Solution:
Given
Mohan bought amount of rice = 5 kg 567 g
Mohan used in 15 days = 2 kg 345 g
Amount of rice left with Mohan = Mohan bought amount of rice – Mohan used in 15 days Therefore Mohan left with an amount of rice is 3 kg 222 g.

Example 6: Divya has 780 L 56 ml of oil. Out of that, the oil consists of 340 L 21 ml of almond oil and some amount of olive oil. How much amount of olive oil.
Solution:
Given
The total amount of oil = 780 L 56 ml
Amount of almond oil = 340 L 21 ml
Amount of olive oil =  Total amount of oil – Amount of almond oil Therefore Divya has an amount of almond oil is 440 L 35 ml.
