Bigger Units to Smaller Units

Bigger Units to Smaller Units Conversions – Length, Mass, Capacity | How to Convert Bigger Units to Smaller Units?

In the previous article, we just learned about the metric measures of length, mass and capacity in detail. While knowing the different units used in the metric system is important, the real purpose behind learning the metric system is for you to be able to use these measurement units to calculate the length, mass, or volume of different objects. In practice, it is often necessary to convert one metric measurement to another unit this happens frequently in the medical, scientific, and technical fields, where the metric system is commonly used.

Bigger Units to Smaller Units

The conversion of one metric unit to another metric unit is useful in our daily life. In particular, conversion is used in mathematical calculations, and to convert bigger units into smaller units we need to multiply the particular unit to which we have to convert them. Before that, we need to know about the conversions and also about the metric units in detail.

Converting Larger Units of Length into Smaller Units of Length

To convert bigger units of length into smaller units of length, first, we need to know the different units of length to convert them.

Unit Conversion Table of Length

1 Kilometre(km) = 10 hectometres (hm) = 1000 m
1 Hectometre(hm) = 10 Decathletes (dcm) = 100 m
1 Demeter (dcm) = 10 Metres (m)
1 Meter (m) =  10 Decimetres (dm) = 100 cm = 1000 mm
1 Decimetre (dm) =  10 Centimetres (cm)
1 Centimetre (cm) = =10 Millimetres (mm)

Example 1:
Convert 34 cm into mm.
Solution:
We know that 1 cm = 10 mm
Now convert 34 cm into mm, 34 cm = ?
let it be x, now cross multiply each other
Now, x * 1 cm = 34 * 10
x = 340 mm

Example 2:

Solution:
We know that 1 km = 1000 m
Now convert 43 km into m, 34 km = ?
let it be x, now cross multiply each other
Now, x * 1 km  = 43* 1000
x = 43000 m

Example 3:
Convert 4 demetres into metres.
Solution:
We know that 1 Demeter = 10 m
Now convert 4 demetres into m, 4 dcm = ?
let it be x, now cross multiply each other
Now, x * 1 dcm  = 4 * 10
x = 40 m

Example 4:
Convert 45 km 256 m into metres.
Solution:
We know that 1 km = 1000 m
Now convert 45 km 256 m into m,
45 km + 256 m = 45 * 1000 m+ 256 m
=  45000 m + 256 m
= 45256 m

Converting Larger Units of Mass into Smaller Units of Mass

To convert bigger units of mass into smaller units of mass, first, we need to know the different units of mass to convert them.
Unit Conversion Table of Mass

1 kilogram(kg) = 10 hectograms
1 hectogram(hg)= 10 decagrams
1 decagram (dag)= 10 grams
1 gram(g)= 10 decigrams
1 decigram (dg)= 10 centigrams
1 centigram (cg)= 10 milligrams

Example 1:
Convert 7 kg 459 g into g.
Solution:
We know that 1 kg = 1000 g
Now convert 7 kg 459 g into g,
7 kg + 459 g = 7 * 1000 g+ 459 g
=  7000 g + 459 g
= 7459 g

Example 2 :
Convert 67 g into milligrams
Solution:
We know that 1 g = 1000 mg
Now convert 67 g into mg, 67g = ?
let it be x, now cross multiply each other
Now, x * 1 g  = 1000 * 67 mg
x = 67000 mg.

Example 3 :
Convert 543.56 kg into decagrams.
Solution:
We know that 1 kg = 100 dag
Now convert 543.56 kg into mg, 543.56 kg = ?
let it be x, now cross multiply each other
Now, x * 1 kg  = 546.56 * 100 dag
x = 54656 dag.

Example 4 :
Convert 65.78 dag into centigrams.
Solution:
We know that 1 kg = 1000 cg
Now convert 65.78 kg into cg, 65.78 kg = ?
let it be x, now cross multiply each other
Now, x * 1 kg  = 65.78 * 1000 cg
x = 65780 cg

Converting Bigger Units of Capacity into Smaller Units of Capacity

To convert bigger units of capacity into smaller units of capacity, first, we need to know the different units of capacity to convert them.

Unit Conversion Table of Capacity

1 kiloliter (kl) =  10 Hectoliters (hl)
1 Hectoliter (hl)=  10 Decaliters (dal)
1 Decaliter (dal)=  10 Liters (l)
1 Liter (l)=  10 Deciliters (dl)
1 Decilitre (dl)=  10 Centilitres (cl)
1 Centilitre=   10 Millilitres

Example 1:
Convert 56 litres into ml
Solution:
We know that 1 L = 1000 ml
Now convert 56 L into ml, 56 L = ?
let it be x, now cross multiply each other
Now, x * 1 ml = 56 * 1000 ml
x = 56000 ml

Example 2:
Convert 5 L 650 ml into ml
Solution:
We know that 1 L = 1000 ml
Now convert 5 L 650 ml into ml,
5 L + 650 ml = 5 * 1000 ml+  650 ml
=  5000 ml + 650 ml
= 5650 ml

Example 3 :
Convert 78.9 L into ml
Solution:
We know that 1 L = 1000 ml
Now convert 78.9 L into ml, 78.9 L = ?
let it be x, now cross multiply each other
Now, x * 1 L  = 78.9 * 1000 ml
x = 78900 ml

Example 4:
Convert 5 L 67 dl into ml
Solution:
We know that 1 L = 1000 ml and 1 dl = 100 ml
Now convert 5 L 67 dl into ml,
5 L + 67 dl = 5 * 1000 ml+  67 * 100 ml
=  5000 ml + 6700 ml
= 11700 ml

Note: Now we will see an example which consists of different type of conversions so that you will get to know in detail and understand the concept,

Example:
Convert the following:
a) 5 km 13 hm 10 dm into m.
b) 56 kg 17 hg 9 dg into mg.
c) 8 kl 14 dal 12 dl into ml.
Solution:
a) 5 km 13 hm 10 dcm into m.
Now, we know that 1 km = 1000 m, 1 hm = 100 m and 1 dcm = 10 m
5 km 13 hm 10 dcm = (5 * 1000 + 13 * 100 + 10 * 10) m
=  5000+1300+100
=  7300 m.

b) 56 kg 17 hg 9 dag into g.
Now we know that 1 kg = 1000 g, 1 hg = 100 g, 1 dag =10 g
56 kg 17 hg 9 dag = (56 * 1000 + 17 * 100 + 9 * 10) g
= 56000 + 1700 + 90
= 57790 g

c) 8 kl 14 hl 12 dal into l.
Now we know that 1 kl = 1000 l, 1 hl = 100 l and 1 dal = 10 l
8 kl 14 hl 12 dal = (8 * 1000 + 14 * 100 + 12 * 10)
= 8000 + 1400 + 120
= 9520 l
