## Word Problems Involving Multiplication of Mixed Numbers

**Example 1.
**There was \(\frac {4}{ 7} \)cake left on the table. Suresh ate \(\frac {1}{ 5} \) of the leftover cake. How much cake did he have?

**Solution:**

Cake left on the table=\(\frac {4}{ 7} \)

Suresh ate Leftover cake=\(\frac {1}{ 5} \)

Suresh has cake= \(\frac {4}{ 7} \) × \(\frac {1}{ 5} \)

=\(\frac {4 × 1}{ 7 × 5} \)

=\(\frac {4 }{ 35} \)**
**Hence, Suresh ate \(\frac {4 }{ 35} \) 0f the cake.

**Example 2.
**There are \(\frac {9}{ 13} \) vegetables in the kitchen. Sindhu used \(\frac {3}{ 8} \) of vegetables. How many kgs of vegetables did she use?

**Solution:**

Vegetables in the kitchen=\(\frac {9}{ 13} \)

Used vegetables=\(\frac {3}{ 8} \)

No. of kgs of vegetables she used=\(\frac {9}{ 13} \) × \(\frac {3}{ 8} \)

=\(\frac {9 × 3}{ 13 ×8} \)

=\(\frac {27}{ 104} \)

Sindhu used \(\frac {27}{ 104} \) kg of vegetables.

**Example 3.
**Raju walks \(\frac {3}{ 4} \) mile every day. How much distance he would walk for 4 days.

**Solution:**

Raju walks every day= \(\frac {3}{ 4} \)mile

The distance he walked for 4 days= 4 ×\(\frac {3}{ 4} \) =3 miles.

Hence, the distance covered by Raju in 4 days is 3 miles.

**Example 4.
**Supraja wants to bake 4 cakes. For each cake, she needs \(\frac {1}{ 2} \) kg of wheat. Find how much quantity required for baking 4 cakes?

**Solution:**

Supraja want to bake cakes = 4

She needs wheat= \(\frac {1}{ 2} \) kg

Quantity required for baking 4 cakes=4 × \(\frac {1}{ 2} \)=2

Hence, the quantity required for baking 4 cakes is 2 kg.

**Example 5.**

At a birthday party, the juice is served \(\frac {3}{ 5} \) for everyone. If 8 people attended a party how much juice is required?

**Solution:**

No. of people attended a party= 8

No. of liters juice required= \(\frac {3}{ 5} \) × 8= \(\frac {24}{ 5} \)=4 \(\frac {4}{ 5} \)

Hence, 4 \(\frac {4}{ 5} \) liters of juice is required.

**Example 6.
**Gopi has \(\frac {1}{ 7} \) of the money. He wants to give money to his sons. How much amount will the two sons get?

**Solution:**

Gopi has money= \(\frac {1}{ 7} \)

Amount shared by them=2 × \(\frac {1}{ 7} \)= \(\frac {2}{ 7} \)

Hence, the two sons will get \(\frac {2}{ 7} \) of money.

**Example 7.
**Ramesh has to give \(\frac {7}{ 5} \) money to his friend. But he has given \(\frac {1}{ 5} \) money. How much money did he give to his friend?

## Solution:

Ramesh has to give money to his friend= \(\frac {7}{ 5} \)

He has given money= \(\frac {1}{ 5} \)1/5

Money is given by Ramesh = \(\frac {7}{ 5} \) × \(\frac {1}{ 5} \)= \(\frac {7}{ 25} \).

**Example 8.
**Ram bought sweets for his family. Each sweet weight is \(\frac {1}{ 5} \) . If he gets 8 sweets in a box, what is the weight of the box?

Weight of 8 sweets in the box= 8 × \(\frac {1}{ 5} \)= \(\frac {8}{ 5} \)

Hence, weight of 8 sweets= \(\frac {8}{ 5} \)

**Example 9.**

A cake mix can make 2 cakes. Siri is making 4 cakes. For each cake, \(\frac {2}{ 9} \) cups of milk. Find how many cups needed for 4 cakes?

**Solution:**

Siri making cakes=4

Milk needed for cake= \(\frac {2}{ 9} \)

Milk needed for 4 cakes=4 × \(\frac {2}{ 9} \)= \(\frac {8}{ 9} \)

Hence, milk needed for 4 cakes is \(\frac {8}{ 9} \) cups of milk.
