III. Solve the following
(i) (-5) – ……….. = 10
(ii) (-15) – ……….. = -5
(iii) (-8) – ……….. = 4
(iv) -25 – 18 = ………..
(v) 16 – 28 = ………..
(vi) -34-0=_____
(vii) 10-23=______

Solution:

(i) Let the number be x.
(-5)-(x)=10
x=-10-5
x=-15
so,(-5)-(-15)=10
(ii) Let the number be x.
(-15)-(x)=-5
x=-15+5
x=-10
so,(-15)-(-10)=-5
(iii) Let the number be x.
(-8)-(x)=4
x=-4-8
x=-12
so,(-8)-(-12)=-8+12=4

Vi. Rakesh borrowed Rs 500 from Anil. Rakesh also borrowed Rs 200 from Akhil. What is the total amount of debt?

Solution:

Given,
Rakesh borrowed from Anil=Rs 500
Rakesh also borrowed from Akhil=Rs 200
Rs 500 debt can be represented by= -500
Rs 200 debt can be represented bt=-200
The total amount of debt=-500-200=-500+-200=-700
Therefore, the total debt is Rs 700.

Vii. The record high temperature for Chennai is 580 Fahrenheit. The record low is -28 0Fahrenheit. What is the difference between high and low?

Solution:

Given,
The record high temperature for Chennai is =580 Fahrenheit
The record low temperature for Chennai is=-280 F
The difference between high and low is=58–28=58+28=860
Therefore, the difference between high and low temperatures is 86 F.
