What are Whole Numbers, Decimals, Mixed Numbers?

Whole Number: It is defined as a set of positive integers which includes 0 in that. Those numbers start from 0 to infinity.

Decimal: A number that has a decimal point followed by digits that show the fractional part.

The combination of both numbers is the mixed number.

Mixed Number: A mixed number is defined as a whole number and a fraction represented together.

Example: 1 \(\frac { 3 }{ 4 } \) is a  mixed number.

where  1 is a whole number and \(\frac { 3 }{ 4 } \) is a fractional part.

How to Convert a Mixed Number into Decimal Form?

Firstly convert the given mixed fraction into a normal fraction form, Now as we know mixed fractions consist of a whole number and a fraction in it.

  • Now multiply the denominator with the whole number and add to the numerator, now place the obtained result in the place of the numerator. i.e  a \(\frac { b }{ c  } \) is a mixed fraction, where a is a whole number and \(\frac { b}{ c } \) is a fraction. Now, conversion into normal fraction form to \(\frac { (c*a)+b }{ c } \).
  • Now it is converted into a normal fraction, Divide the numerator with denominator to obtain decimal form.

Examples on Representing Mixed Numbers to Decimals

Example 1.

Convert 2 \(\frac { 3 }{ 4 } \) into decimal form?

Solution:

Given Mixed fraction is   2 \(\frac { 3 }{ 4 } \), where 2 is a whole number and \(\frac { 3 }{ 4 } \) is fractional number.

Now multiply the denominator with the whole number and add to the numerator, now place the obtained result in the place of the numerator.  i.e 4  * 2 + 3 = 11, keep 11 as a numerator.

After converting the mixed fraction into an improper fraction, we get

\(\frac { 11 }{ 4 } \), convert into decimal form by dividing numerator with the denominator

i.e 11 / 4 = 2.75

Therefore, 2.75 is the decimal form.

Example 2.

Convert 4 \(\frac { 5}{ 8 } \) into decimal form.

Solution:

Given Mixed fraction is   4 \(\frac {5 }{ 8 } \), where 4 is a whole number and \(\frac { 5}{ 8 } \) is fractional number.

Now multiply the denominator with the whole number and add to the numerator, now place the obtained result in the place of the numerator.  i.e 8  * 4 + 5 = 37, keep 37 as a numerator.

After converting the mixed fraction into an improper fraction, we get

\(\frac { 37 }{ 8 } \), convert into decimal form by dividing numerator with the denominator

i.e 37/ 8 = 2.75

Therefore, 4.625 is the decimal form.
