Mass – Definition

Mass is the fundamental quantity of physics and the property of matter. Mass is defined as the measure of the amount of matter in the body. The standard unit of mass is kilograms. Mass can also be measured in grams. Mass does not change at any time. Only for extreme cases, when a huge amount of energy is taken from the body. Mass can never be zero and it has a magnitude. Mass doesn’t change according to the location. Ordinary balances can measure the mass.

How to Measure Mass?

Mass can be measured through kilograms and grams. For smaller units, we can measure in grams. In short notation, grams can be written as g. For very smaller units we measure in milligrams. It can be specified as mg.

For larger units, we can measure in kilograms. In short notation, we can write kilograms as kg. The standard unit of mass is kilograms. The relation between kilograms, grams, milligrams. We can convert one unit to another by using these relations.

1 kg=1000g

1000g=1kg

1 mg=1000g

Measurement of Mass Examples

Consider some examples of measuring mass as shown below

Example 1:

Sita bought 5kg 500g of mangoes. Gita bought 2 kg 200 g less than Sita. Find the number of mangoes purchased by Gita?

Solution:

Sita bought mangoes=5kg 500g

The number of mangoes purchased by Gita less than Sita = 2kg 200g

Therefore, the number of mangoes purchased by Gita = 5 kg 500 g- 2 kg 200 g

=3kg 300g

Example 2:

Ram bought 15 kg 350 g of rice. Laxman bought 10 kg 125 g of rice more than Ram. Find the amount of rice purchased by Laxman?

Solution:

Rice bought by Ram=15 kg 350 g

Rice bought by Laxman more than Ram=10 kg 125 g

Therefore, The quantity of rice purchased by Laxman =15 kg 350 g+10 kg 125 g

=25 kg 475g

Example 3:

Rani and Vani are two friends. Rani’s weight is 62 kg 500 g and Vanis’s weight is 59 kg 300 g. What is the total weight of two friends?

Solution:

Rani weight =62 kg 500g

Vani weight=59 kg 300g

Therefore, the total weight of the two friends=62 kg 500g+59 kg 300 g

=121 kg 800 g

Example 4:

Rahul bought 3 kg 250 g of sugar, 500 g of tea powder, 25 kg 150 g of rice. What is the total weight of the groceries Rahul bought?

Solution:

Rahul bought sugar=3 kg 250 g

Rahul bought tea powder=500g

Rahul bought rice=25 kg 150 g

Therefore, total weight of groceries=3 kg 250 g+ 500 g +25 kg 150 g

=28 kg 900g

Example 5:

Rani bought 5 kgs cake, 2 kgs of chocolates, and 2kgs of biscuits on her birthday. Find how much weight did rani carry?

Solution:

Rani bought cake=5 kg

Rani bought chocolates=2kg

Rani bought biscuits=2 kg

Therefore, Rani carried weight=5 kg+2 kg+2 kg

=9 kg

Mass Conversion Examples

Example 1:

Convert 3000 g into kilograms?

Solution:

We can convert grams into kilograms by dividing the number of grams by 1000.

For converting 3000g to kg divide it with 1000.

3000 g ÷1000=3 kg

Therefore 3000g is converted to 3 kg.

Example 2:

Convert 7 kg to grams?

Solution:

We can convert kg to grams by multiplying the number of kilograms by 1000.

For converting 7 kg to grams multiply it with 1000.

7 kg* 1000=7000g

Therefore 7 kg is converted to 7000 g.
