 # Units for Measurement of Capacity – Definition, Chart, Examples | Standard & Metric Units of Capacity

In this article, we will learn about the units of measurement of capacity. Before going into the topic let us know what is meant by capacity. Capacity is the term where we use to store some amount of liquid in a container. You can learn about the measuring capacity units from here. With the help of the scale, we can measure the capacity of the liquid i.e, by placing the scale in a mug or cup. Usually, we see the scale in measuring the quantity of milk, water bottle.

## Units of Measurement for Capacity | What are the Units of Capacity?

Units are used to measure the quantity of the item. We can measure the capacity of the liquids by mugs, cups, jars etc. Remember that the capacity depends on the amount of liquid you take. If you take a small amount of liquid we measure with a teaspoon or tablespoon. The units we take in US standard units are fluid ounces, pints, quarts, cups, and gallons. In the metric system, we measure by deciliters, milliliters, and liters.

### Units of Capacity Chart | Capacity Measurement Table

US Standard Units of Measurement for Capacity:
We use cups, pints, quarts, and gallons to measure the capacity of the liquid.

 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces (fl oz) 1 pint (pt) = 2 cups 1 quart (qt) = 2 pints 1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts

Metric Units for Capacity:
In the metric system, we use milliliters, liters, deciliters, hectoliter, decaliter, kiloliter to measure the capacity of liquids.

 1 milliliter (ml) = 0.001 liter 1 centiliter (cl) = 0.01 liter 1 deciliter (dl) = 0.1 liter 1 liter (l) =  1000 milliliters 1 hectoliter (hl) = 100 liters 1 decaliter (dal) = 10 liters 1 kiloliter (kl) = 1000 liters

We use the above chart to convert from liters to milliliters or milliliters to liters.
1 liter = 1000 ml
1/2 liter = 500 ml
1/4 liter  = 250 ml
These are the units of measurement of capacity in US Standard units and metric units.

### Measuring Capacity Examples

Example 1.
Convert 5000 milliliters into liters?
Solution:
1000 milliliters = 1 litres
5000 milliliters = 5 litres

Example 2.
Raju has 10 liters of water and he gave to 10 members by measuring each as 1 liter and convert them to milliliters?
Solution:
Given,
Raju has 10 liters of water and he gave to 10 members by measuring each as 1 liter.
1 litre = 1000 millilitres
10 litres = 10000 millilitres.
Thus he gave 1 liter to each member that means 1000 milliliters.

Example 3.
Convert 1 quart to cups?
Solution:
We know that,
1 quart = 2 pints
1 pint = 2 cups
2 pints = 2 × 2cups = 4 cups
Thus 1 quart = 4 cups

Example 4.
Convert 3008 milliliters into liters?
Solution:
We know that
1000 milliliters = 1 liter
3000 milliliters = 3 × 1 litre = 3 liters
Then 3008 milliliters = 3 liters 8 milliliters

Example 5.
Convert 4000 milliliters into liters?
Solution:
We know that
1000 milliliters = 1 litre
4000 milliliters = 4 × 1 litres = 4 liters
