### How to find the Length and Width of a Rectangle when given the Area?

Example 1.
Find the breadth of the rectangle whose length is 8 cm and the area is 72 sq cm?

Solution:

Given,
The length of the rectangle=8 cm
The area of the rectangle=72 sq cm
We know that Area= length × breadth
Therefore, the breadth of the rectangle is 9 cm.

Example 2.
Find the length of the rectangle whose breadth is 500 cm and the area is 20 sq m?

Solution:

Given,
The breadth of the rectangle=500 cm
we know that 100 cm=1 m
500cm=500/100=5 m
The area of the rectangle=20 sq m
The length of the rectangle=?
We know that Area= length × breadth
=20/5=4 m
Hence, the length of the rectangle is 4 m.

Example 3.
A rectangle with a length of 13 units longer than its width and an area of 30 sq units. Find the length of the rectangle’s shortest side?

Solution:

A rectangle has a length of 13 units longer than its width i.e. l=w+13 —> eq 1
Area of the rectangle=30
l × w=30 —>eq 2
Substitute l=w+13 in eq 2
(w+13) × w=30
w2+13 w=30
w2+13 w-30=0
Factor the polynomial
(w-2)(w+15)=0
w=2,or w=-15
-15 is not valid as the width for the rectangle.
2 is the width of the rectangle which is shorter side since the length is 13 units longer(l=w+13).

Example 4.
If the area of the rectangle is 55 sq cm and the length of the rectangle is 11 cm. Find the breadth of the rectangle?

Solution:

Given,
The area of the rectangle=55 sq cm
The Length of the rectangle=11 cm
We know that length × breadth=Area
Hence, the Breadth of the rectangle is 5 cm.

Example 5.
If the area of the rectangle is 605 sq cm and its length is five times the width. Find the length and width of the rectangle?

Solution:

Given,
The area of the rectangle=605 sq cm
Length is five times the width.
Let the width of the rectangle be x.
The length of the rectangle is 5x.
We know that area of the rectangle=length × breadth
605=5x.x
5x2=605
x2=605/5=121
x=11
The length of the rectangle is 5x=5(11)=55 cm
The breadth of the rectangle is x=11 cm
Therefore, the length and breadth of the rectangle are 55 cm,11 cm.

Example 6.
The area of the rectangular screen is 280 sq m. Its length is 14 m. Find its width?

Solution:

Given,
The area of the rectangular screen is =280 sq m
The Length of the rectangular screen=14 m
The width of the rectangular screen is=?
By the formula, Area=length × breadth
=20
Hence, the breadth of the rectangle is 20 m.

Example 7.
The area of the rectangular house is 2000 sq m. The width of the rectangular house is 200 meters. Find the length of the rectangular house?

Solution:

Given,
The area of the rectangular house is =2000 sq m
The width of the rectangular house is =200 meters
The length of the rectangular house=?
As we know that area=length × breadth
