Three-Digit Numbers – Definition

The Three-digit numbers have only three digits. Every digit within the number includes a place value. The place value orders start from right to left as units, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousand, and so on. Some examples of the three-digit numbers are 351, 465, 678, 879, 538, etc.

What is Subtraction?

Subtraction is an important basic arithmetic operation, it is the process of finding the difference between two digits or numbers. The terms utilized in subtraction are minuend, subtrahend, difference. The number from which the opposite number is subtracted is termed as minuend. The number which is subtracted is called a subtrahend. The result of subtraction is called Difference. The symbol ‘-‘ (minus sign) is used to represent the subtraction.

3-Digit Subtraction with Borrowing Steps | How to Subtract 3-Digit Numbers With Borrowing?

Subtraction of Three-digit numbers with borrowing is similar to subtraction of Two-digit numbers, Four-digit numbers. The rules of subtraction are almost the same because the numbers having fewer digits. The process is given below how to subtract 3-digit numbers,

  • Initially, you will identify the greater number and smaller number, write the greater number first then below write the smaller number.
  • Starts subtracting digits from the right left, so you will compare the upper digits and lower digits.
  • After comparison, you will have the lower digit is small than the upper digit, subtract the lower value from the upper value and write the answer.
  • If in case that the upper digit is smaller than the lower digit, then take a borrow or regrouping from the following number. Now the value becomes greater, you will easily be subtracted.

3-Digit Subtraction with Regrouping Examples

Example 1:
Subtracting the values 576 from 284?

Solution:
In the given question, the numbers are 576 and 284.
Now, we want to perform the subtraction operation in between the given numbers, then we get the difference value.
The numbers are 576 and 284,
First, write the greatest number first and then the smallest number. Start subtracting the digits from ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousand, and so on.

1. First, Subtract of values in one’s place that is 6- 4,  then we get the value is 2. So, write that value 2 in one’s place.
2. Next, subtract the values which are in Ten’s value that is 8 – 7, but it is not possible. So that takes one borrow from 5, then the value changes to 17. Now Subtract the values that are 17 – 8 = 9. Write the value 9 in Ten’s place.
3. Next, Subtraction of values in Hundred’s place that is  4-2=2. Write the value 2 in the hundreds place.

Therefore, the difference between the two given numbers is 576, and 284 is 292.

Example 2:
Find the below figure value,

Solution:
In the given question figure, the numbers are 945 and 636.
Now, we will find the value of the given two numbers,
In between numbers, we have a subtraction symbol. So using subtraction we will find the difference value.
The subtracted numbers are 945 and 636, which means 945 – 636,
1. First, Subtract the values which are in one’s place that is 5- 6,  it is not possible. So we take a borrow from 4, then the value becomes 15. Now subtract 6 from 15, we get the value is 9. So, write that value 9 in one’s place.
2. Next, subtract the values which are in Ten’s value that is 3 – 3, then the value is zero. we are taking a borrow from 4, so the value 4 is reduced to 3. Write the value 0 in Ten’s place.
3. Next, Subtraction of values in Hundred’s place that is  9-6= 3. Write the value 3 in the hundreds place.

Therefore, the difference value of the two given numbers is 945, and 636 is 309.

Example 3:
Find the difference between the 672 and 654

Solution:
In the given question, the numbers are 672, 654
Now, we will find the difference between the given two numbers.
We know the subtraction law, by using this rule we can find the difference value.
The numbers 672 and 654
= 672 – 654

So after subtraction, the difference value of the two given 672 and 654 is 18.

Example 4:
Find the difference between the 989 and 897. Write the difference value.

Solution:
In the given question, the numbers are 989 and 897.
Now, we need to find the difference value of the given numbers.
The below shows, how to subtract 3-digit numbers with borrowing
First, arrange the greater number first and then the smallest number. Subtract the values which are in one’s place. So, the values 9 – 7 are 2. Write the value 2 in one’s place like as shown in the above figure.
Next, we will subtract the values which are in ten’s place. The values are 8 – 9, Since we can not subtract 9 from 8, so take borrow from the hundred digit number 9. Now the value will be 18, subtract 9 from 18. Write the value 9 in one’s place like as shown in the above figure.
After, taking the borrow from the hundreds of places. The value at hundred places is reduced to 8. Now, subtract the value 8 from 8. We get the value is 0.
Hence, the difference value of the two given numbers 989 and 897 is 92.

Example 5:
Rakesh has 612 Apples. John has 203 Apples. How many numbers apples are less to the john?

Solution:
As given in the question,
No of the apples Rakesh has = 612 Apples
No of the apples John has = 203 Apples
Now, we find how many numbers apples are less to the john. By using subtraction law, we get the value
So, the apples are 612 and 203, 612 – 203 =

Therefore, John has 409 apples is less compared to Rakesh.

Example 6:
Subtract the value 468 from 687. Write the difference value.

Solution:
In the given question, the numbers are 468 and 687.
Now, we need to find the difference value of the two given numbers.
By using the Subtraction method, we can get the difference value,
The numbers are 468 and 687,
687 – 468 = 219 ( 8 is not subtracted from 7. So, take a regroup from the following number 8, then the value changes to 17. Now subtract 17 – 8 = 9. After taking borrow the value 8 is reduces to 7, so 7-6 = 1. Next 6-4 =2)
Therefore, after subtracting 468 from 687, we get the difference value is 219.
