Aerospace Engineer

Have you heard the phrase, “This is not rocket science”? Well, for aerospace engineers, what they do certainly IS rocket science! These engineers design rockets that blast into space and airplanes that glide through the sky. They use their advanced mathematical skills to build the machines and test them to make sure they are working safely.

Aerospace engineers are part of a team of people who work together and help each other. One person might do the math calculations. Some work together to make models and others build prototypes and test them.

STEM Task:
Make a straw rocket. Wrap a piece of paper around a marker, tape it, and slide it off. Tape a paper topper to one end. Slip the rocket over a straw. Team up with a partner to test your rockets. Blow the straw to launch the rocket and then measure how far it flies. Work together to modify your designs and test your rockets again. Did they go farther?

How do you know when you need help? When you are stuck, sometimes you can help yourself get unstuck. One way to do this is talking about the problem. Another strategy is to look for tools, like a model, which can help you understand the problem. Or you can try a similar problem that is simpler. But, if you are still stuck, you can also ask for help from others. You may need more help from others in the beginning, but as you practice using the tools to get yourself unstuck, you will get better at helping yourself.

Reflect

Question.
Were you able to identify if you needed help to construct or operate your rocket? What strategies did you use to help yourself?
Answer:
I use paper, tape, and straw to construct the rocket.

Question.
How did working with a partner help you improve your rocket design? How did it help your partner?
Answer:
My partner helped me a lot to design the rocket.
She helped by suggesting the models to construct a rocket.
