What is the Formation of the Greatest and the Smallest Numbers?

In the Formation of Numbers, we arrange the numbers accordingly in ascending and descending order.  Number formation develops number sense in kids from primary school and helps them do basic operations in maths.

As we know earlier, the smallest number or lowest number is formed by arranging numbers from smallest to highest in ascending order. The smallest number is the least value when compared with other numbers. We place the smallest digit on the extreme left side to get the smallest number. You know 0 is the single smallest digit, but, we never write the digit 0 at the extreme left place, rather we place the digit 0 at the extreme second left side of the number to get the smallest number.

The greatest number or largest number is formed by arranging the given digits of numbers in descending order. The greatest number is the highest value when compared with other numbers. The position of the digit at the extreme left of a number increases its place value. So, we place the greatest digit on the left side to raise its value.

How to Form Greatest and Smallest Numbers?

The following steps help you to make understand easily when forming the greatest and smallest numbers. Check this procedure and practice while solving. The procedure to form numbers is as follows:

Step 1: Place the digits accordingly to their place value. Place values are assigned by how many digits are given. For example, if there are four digits, then we have four place values i.e., thousands place, hundreds place, tens place, and one’s place.

Step 2: To form the greatest number, we will arrange the digits in descending order i.e. from largest to smallest digits, and place the highest digit at the extreme left side of its place value to enhance its value.

Step 3: To form the smallest number, will arrange the digits in ascending order as smallest to highest digits and place the smallest digit at the extreme left side of its place value compared with other digits given.

Step 4: The smallest single digit is 0, will never place at the extreme left side to get the smallest number because the digit 0 has no value if it is the starting number. We will place the digit 0, at the extreme second left of the number to get the smallest number.

Greatest and Smallest Numbers Formation Examples

Example 1:

Form the greatest and smallest numbers using the digits 5, 3, 8, 6.

Solution:

First, we have to arrange the numbers according to their place values. Given four digits, the place values we used are thousands place (TH), hundreds place (H), tens place (T), and one’s place (O).

To form the smallest number we place the smallest digit at thousands place, and next digits at hundreds place, tens place, and one’s place. The smallest digit is placed at the highest place value of the number.

Similarly, to form the greatest number we place the highest digit at thousands place and the remaining digits at left after the thousands place in order. The highest digit is placed at the highest place of the number.

Let’s form the numbers

                                  Th  H T O

In descending order    8  6  5  3

In ascending order      3  5  6  8

Thus,

The smallest number is 3,568

The greatest number is 8,653.

Example 2:

Write the smallest and the greatest numbers using the digits 7, 6, 3, 9, 1.

Solution:

Given digits are 7, 6, 3, 9, and 1

To get the smallest number arrange the numbers from smallest to highest in ascending order as follows

Thus, the numbers arranged in ascending order are 1 < 3 < 6 < 7 < 9.

To get the greatest number arrange the numbers from highest to lowest in descending order as follows

Thus, the numbers arranged in ascending order are 9 > 7 > 6 > 3 > 1.

Hence,

The greatest number is 97,631.

The smallest number is 13,679.

Example 3:

Form the numbers and write the smallest and greatest numbers using the digits 8, 4, 7.

Solution:

Given digits are 8, 4, and 7

First, we form the three digits numbers and then find the greatest and smallest numbers.

Formed numbers are 847, 874, 487, 478, 784, 748.

Now, arrange these numbers in order in ascending order

478, 487, 748, 784, 847, 874.

The smallest number is 478 from the above-arranged numbers, as 478 is placed at first of the sequence.

The greatest number is 874 as it is placed at the last of the sequence.

Example 4:

Write the greatest and smallest numbers by digits 5, 9, 0, 8, 1.

Solution:

Given digits are 5, 9, 0, 8, and 1.

Arrange the numbers in descending order, to get the greatest number

9 > 8 > 5 > 1 > 0. Hence, the greatest number is 98,510.

Arrange the numbers in ascending order, to get the smallest number

0 < 1 < 5 < 8 < 9.

Here, to get the smallest number, we can’t start the number with 0. So, keep the digit 0 at the second position of the number.

The smallest number that comes after the digit 0 here, is digit 1.

Hence, the smallest number formed is 10,589.
