The division is represented with the operator “ ÷”. It is defined as a short horizontal line that has two dots one above the line and the other below the line.

Properties of Division of Whole Numbers

Property 1: Division by 1
If any value or number is divided by 1, then there will be no change in the result value.
Example:
Suppose that the number is 65. If we divide the number 65 by 1, then the result is the number itself i.e., 65
Property 2: Division by zero(0)
If zero is divided by any number or value, then the result will be 0.
Example:
Suppose that 0 is divided by 87. If we divide the number 0 by 87, then the result is 0.
Property 3: Division by the same number
If any value or number is divided by the same number, then the result is always 1.
Example:
Suppose that 87 is divided by 87, then the result is 1.

How to Divide Whole Numbers? | Steps in Division of Whole Numbers

Step 1: In the first step, start dividing in the leftmost part or from the digit of the highest place value.
Step 2: Then, multiply the quotient by the divisor then subtract.
Step 3: In the next step, bring down the next place value. Again, divide it by the divisor. Write the quotient on the top of that same place value.
Step 4: Now, repeat step 2 until all the place values have been divided.
Step 5: Finally, to check if your quotient is correct, multiply the quotient by the divisor. Remember, multiplication is the opposite of division.
Step 6: Verify the product is the same as the dividend.

Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend

A bus travels 60 miles and consumes 3 gallons of gas. Find the number of miles per gallon the bus gets?
Solution:
As given
No of miles the bus travels = 60 miles
No of gallons it consumes = 3
The number of miles per gallons the bus gets = miles/gallons
= 60/3
=20
